Active Minds Like Active Bodies
A growing body of research shows that active bodies promote active, productive minds. College faculty, while dedicated to the life of the mind, often neglect their bodies, not only threatening their health and well-being, but also potentially hurting their academic productivity. "Active Minds Like Active Bodies" provides the opportunity for faculty members to join a fun, non-threatening group of fellow academics for exercise and wellness programs. Faculty members choose a morning, noon, or evening workout session that meets 2-3 times per week. Professors from diverse fields meet at a central location, and exercise in a social, fun setting. Literature and a website on healthy lifestyles accompany the workout sessions. The takeaways for faculty members include: improved health and wellness; a lifestyle change that incorporates regular exercise; increased productivity in research, writing, and teaching; new friends and fitness partners across disciplines; and a sense of community.
