Collaborative "Social-Networks" in School for Global Awareness

Education Solution by Karina L on October 5, 2012 at 6:12 AM

OBJECTIVE: kids at school will work collaboratively on projects with other kids around the world. Addressing common issues of all kinds: scientific, social, environmental, health-related, communities, etc. American kids can learn the values and practices of other cultures and how certain countries manage to live well with limitations: how to handle hot weather without air conditioning? how to take care of crops to feed my family? what outdoor games to play with my brothers and sisters? Kids learn how problems are addressed around the world and open their minds to using practices and values that may be re-applicable in their community.
HOW DOES IT WORK? Projects are conducted over the internet on a social-network type of platform. They are initiated by any school around the world and any other school/student can join to participate. Projects are supervised by school coordinators and graded as part of the school program.

I like this idea of collaborating globally on real projects, solutions and creative innovation with students and using peer to peer teaching. How would you get schools on board for the project? What kind of platforms have you thought about? How would you work with time differences?
