When it comes to taking a decision the more informed we are the best the decision we take. Many of the problems that we have in the world are caused by a bad decision we have taken as a society and individuals. That is why I believe education is the best way to solve many problems that the world has (poverty, hunger, violent conflicts, etc). My idea is very similar to an initiative that already started in the United Sates with Academic Earth academicearth.org , in which you can find online courses for free from the top schools, the thing is that the site is only in English so that limits its scope. My idea is to follow the academic earth initiative enhancing its reach but with subtitles with at least the top 10 languages more spoken covering almost half of the world population; Mandarin, Spanish, Hindi, Arabic, Bengali, Portuguese, Russian, Japanese, German, Tai-Kadai, Korean and French.

I think your idea is a brilliant one and agree that a rise in education would make the world a better place. Hoping to further increase your idea’s potential, I would like to offer a couple of suggestions:
1. Go beyond “academics” and also consider discussions focused on “ideas”. Oftentimes it is not simply the lack of knowledge but also our way of thinking (ie. closed mindedness, cognitive biases, etc) that lead us to make bad decisions. Putting subtitles into videos similar to those in foratv, ted.com, bigthink.com, thersa.org, edge.org, sciencedump etc. (ie. sites that often discuss/inspire new ideas, new ways of thinking, innovation, etc) would surely increase both your reach and impact.
2. Leverage on TED’s Open Translation project (http://www.ted.com/pages/287). These guys have done it successfully partnering with http://dotsub.com/solutions/languages. So it might be worthwhile to consider something similar and perhaps consider working with DOTsub to implement your idea as well.

I agree with your proposal and initiative to expand and support these free courses with subtitles in different languages, in my opinion It will help to be more aware of the differences that diverse cultures have in relation to the same subjects they are learning in these courses, to be in the same line and communicate better among ourselves (speaking globally).
The knowledge that I see in this proposal is to have a combination of different beliefs to unify and learn sharing common purposes in this case: trying to get the best education to future leaders so many world problems can be solved
