Entrepreneurship for all

Education Solution by Regina D on October 10, 2011 at 8:09 PM

Many of the skills that I have learned have been because of entrepreneurial projects I was involved throughout my education career. Not everyone is exposed to the same opportunity but I believe that everyone can learn from being involved in a semester long project that teaches entrepreneurial skills and at the same times helps the community. Can you imagine if all freshmen were required to do a community service project that engaged them through creativity and innovation? We would create a win-win for the community and the students. At ASU, we currently have the ASU 101 classes and by integrating a creative community service project to all courses then students would be able to learn how to use ASU's resources to create change in the community. This would also create a pipeline for projects such as innovation challenge by inspiring students from the beginning on thinking about how they can create change.

Why stop at the university level? Why not include high school students? This could be a very inexpensive (financial) recruitment tool for ASU's Undergraduate Admissions, but exponentially positive return on investment to the community/ASU/students.

Every semester ASU purchases lists of all the top high school students in the nation, including those to have taken the PSAT which are usually high school juniors and sophomores.

Could you imagine instead of sending an email, text message or letter to a potential student about attending ASU we connect with them via a social network like facebook and invite them to a community service event in their area? A service event with current ASU students, alumni,, staff, and dare I print, faculty.

I couldn't think of a better tool to get students to not only care about serving others, but maybe peak their interest in becoming a future Sun Devil.

For the sake of alternatives, what if they student later on decides not to attend ASU after high school; yet, ASU continued to invite them throughout their high school journey. What if that student takes the idea to the college they do attend and it becomes a national movement?

Hey JD, I think that this idea could be implemented at any university. For example, in Mexico all universities require their students to do 400 hours of community service before they graduate. However, I think that by making it a requirement for freshmen, they are able to gain more from the experience than as a senior.

For the UoT Austin program do you have a website I can search? Also since you are interested in entrepreneurship in Higher education check out this conference you might want to attend: ashokau.org/exchange

Here's the IE at UT facebook page http://www.facebook.com/pages/Intellectual-Entrepreneurship-Consortium/1...
Sorry I didn't notice the comment sooner, Regina. Here's the offical website for the consortium https://webspace.utexas.edu/cherwitz/www/ie/

This sounds like a great idea and far more likely to be implemented at Arizona State than most univeristies because of their commitment to intellectual entrpreneurship. Check out Univeristy of Texas at Austin for their IE program and see what Dr. Richard Cherwitz and others are doing.
