FFF 101: Fight the Freshman Fifteen

Health Solution by Kalah P on October 28, 2011 at 4:59 PM

When students enter college, they are often uninformed about their health and how daily activities affect their bodies. Students do not know how to make healthy choices about their eating, sleeping patterns, and exercise routines. All of these factors contribute to the "freshman fifteen" and other health issues that many American college students experience. Our solution is to mandate a health and wellness class for all ASU freshman. Students would learn how to make healthy decisions and how to utilize the health services on-campus. They would be taught about healthy eating and how to choose a nutritious and balanced diet. The class would also involve working out and playing recreational sports. Through this class, we hope to advocate for a better lifestyle for students, not only during their time at ASU but throughout the rest of their lives.

I would take this further and try starting a conversation about the food options available to students on the go. In the MU alone, there are few healthy eating options that are affordable for students, and th ePOD Market is filled mainly with candy, soda and high fat foods. Maybe ASU should try to make the push to make healthy food more readily available.
