Local Art Appreciation and Therapy

Communities Solution by Derrick N on August 18, 2012 at 9:08 AM

My name is Derrick Norman. I am currently a student at ASU and trying to find effective ways to introduce local Art to recovering Drug Addicts and Alcoholics in Phoenix and the surrounding areas. Give people in rehabilitation facilities a chance to get out and get inspired. Have a select group of dedicated people in the field of recovery to contact local galleries and museums to see what kind of offers they could provide for these rehabilitation centers. I currently have my Bachelors of Fine Art and am going back to school for my degree in Psychology(Substance Abuse). I believe Art Therapy and art appreciation would give recovering people another important health outlet in expressing themselves(Artist or not), While giving people interested in others a chance to be of service to others. If you have any input or would just like to communicate with me on the topic please email me at derricknrmn@yahoo.com. Thanks!

Hey Derrick!
I totally support you! Man does not live on bread alone! Let me elaborate. Art is not recognize for the importance it has in the life of a human being. A person deprived of art (be it music, dance, literature, etc.) is not a complete human being. I'm aware my assertions may seem extremist, but that is because as society we are married with the idea that if we don't see it or is not tangible does not exist. Art may give an individual the lost part of them that they were looking for in drugs. I whish you the best of luck!!!
