Renovate the Secret Garden

Communities Solution by Rosaura A on October 5, 2011 at 1:28 AM

The secret garden is a great place to study and chill, but when I go in there it doesn't really feel like a garden. I think that it should be renovated; more trees should be planted, flowers should be put and nice benches would be fantastic. I think this is a great area that can be enhanced to provide a space for students to relax, study, or simply hang out when they're bored. Let's beautify it!

I agree, in order to have the chance to relax there it needs to be renovated. I think the necessary authorities should be informed on this.

There are several Campus Harvest trees and shrubs located in the Secret Garden. There is the Burro banana, White Sapote tree, passion fruit vine, White Guava and the famous Seville sour orange trees. In the spring lavender and orange blossoms perfume the air. But the tropical trees, shrubs and flowers in the Secret Garden are under constant stress due to an old, worn out irrigation system. Inefficient sprinkler heads spray water onto the sloping planters that in turn drain down into the underpasses beneath the building. The entire system needs to be replaced with a solar powered system. Planters need to be dug out and ASU compost worked into the worn out soil. A tier one SIRF grant could help jump start funding for this project http://cfo.asu.edu/sirf-apply

I need students that are interested in this project to contact me at the Arboretum at ASU booth at the next Tempe campus Farmers Market on Orange Mall just west of the MU fountain.

I think this is an amazing idea. Perhaps a group of students could get together on weekends to plan and execute a renovation for the garden. I would be willing to bet that valley nurseries would be willing to contribute plants, flowers, trees or shrubs to the effort, perhaps in exchange for plaques throughout the garden?

How do we go about making this happen?!
