Safe Battery Disposal
When batteries degrade, they release harmful materials including lead and mercury. If these metals enter a water sorce and are ingested, they can cause very dangerous problems including tremors, headaches, vomiting, genetic damage, and death.
Currently at ASU, we only have a couple safe places to dispose of batteries. Students would have to walk long distances to drop of their used batteries, or would have to call to have them picked up, which is unrealistic for batteries from everyday personal use.
I propose that battery drop boxes be installed at strategic points on all campus locations, focused around living areas where students gather. The batteries can be dropped off and once per month, ASU can pick up the batteries and take them to the safe disposal facilities, protecting our drinking water and reusing these materials in a more sustainable way.
