Science Detectives
Science Detectives is an after school program at local elementary schools. ASU students lead weekly lessons on science topics. We have three goals:
1. To present scientific material in a fun and engaging way that will encourage a lifelong passion for inquiry.
2. To provide students with student instructor role models who are pursuing degrees in many fields.
3. To teach the students real scientific theory; ideally this will lay a solid foundation for future science courses.
Hi Nancy,
You've touched on one of our main goals! We have talked a lot about expanding to junior and high schools, and have identified it as one of our primary avenues of expansion over the next few years. First we want to focus on really solidifying our elementary school curricula so that we offer the best lessons possible to our elementary school participants. Thanks for the interest!
And Three Birds, we have done a few lessons on renewable energy. Several of our instructors are Sustainability students, and the lessons they prepare really resonate with the elementary school audience!
Have you thought at all about expanding to junior high and high schools. It would be great to continue to promote science especially as it related to girls staying interested in science/math as a career direction. I've seen research that says there is a huge cliff in highschool for girls as it relates to their interest in math and science. You could even structure clubs to help create the curriculum and projects for the younger children and possibly inspire some to go into the teaching profession :)
Have you done any programs with renewable energy?
Hey Lavell! That's great to hear. Send an email with your name, year and major to sciencedetectivesasu@gmail.com, and we'll let you know when we're doing our next recruitment drive!
